The island features: - A small fishing community and seasonal tourist facilities - The 17th-century Fort of São João Baptista, built to defend against pirates and foreign powers - Dramatic red granite cliffs and sea caves - Crystal-clear waters popular for diving and snorkeling - A lighthouse dating from the 19th century The island was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011, recognizing its exceptional biodiversity and relatively pristine ecosystem. ## Wildlife and Ecology The archipelago supports significant seabird colonies, including one of the most important breeding populations of common murres (guillemots) on the Iberian Peninsula. Other notable species include: - European shags - Yellow-legged gulls - Peregrine falcons - Various migratory species The surrounding waters are rich in marine life, and the area is protected as a nature reserve. ## The Farilhões Group More remote and inaccessible than Berlenga Grande, the Farilhões rocks lie further out to sea and are uninhabited. They serve primarily as important seabird nesting sites and are rarely visited except by researchers and occasional boat trips from Peniche. ## Visiting the Islands Regular boat services operate from Peniche during the summer months, though visitor numbers are limited to protect the fragile ecosystem. Accommodation on Berlenga Grande is extremely limited, with a small campsite and a historic hostel within the old fort being the primary options. The islands are known for their dramatic scenery, clear waters, and sense of isolation, making them a distinctive destination along the Portuguese coast.
